For me, it's always opening stockings first. No matter what there was enticing us under the tree, it's always been a tradition to open our stockings first. Another tradition associated with the stocking is that it usually contains some socks and underwear.

Opening stockings first for our family, too. (I love stockings and Easter baskets.) And growing up, our stockings always had a tangerine in the toe. Another tradition I love is advent calendars. Growing up we just had the paper ones with the little flaps.

My kids have gotten many special ornaments through places we have traveled, from friends and family, and from me each year based on their interests or favorite characters that year. My children decorate their own tree in their bedrooms the weekend before Thanksgiving with their ornaments and tree skirts I made them. For each ornament they receive, I make a note on the ornament or on the box the year and who it came from or the event associated with it. Each year, as the kids pull out each ornament, they recollect the person or event or just call out "I remember this ornament" or "This is my favorite ornament". My kids are 10 and will likely leave my house with enough ornaments to decorate 2 trees at their own house.

Mellisa said...

Each Christmas since Mark and I have been together, we have gotten a dated ornament to add to our tree. Although this may not seem like a very important tradition, I always love opening up my decorations every year and seeing how long we have been together and reflect on the many memories we've had during those years.

My favorite Christmas tradition is telling my mom I'll help her decorate the tree. I hang up a few ornaments and then "have to take a rest" and sit on the couch and watch her. All of the sudden, before I know it, the tree is decorated! ;) It happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Every time I offer to help, even though we both know I don't end up helping much haha.

oh wow, LOVE elle's studio!

I have so many favorite Christmas traditions... but i think my favorite is our Christmas Eve tradition- we go to a movie during the day (i have been doing this since we were little- my parents way of "killing time" since we were so antsy), going out to eat for dinner, and Christmas Eve candlelit service. Singing silent night by candlelite with everyone at church on christmas eve always makes me cry!!!!

Michele H. said...

My favorite holiday tradition is family night of watching the Polar Express on Christmas Eve. Can't wait :)

Jen L said...

i love all the traditions of christmas, but particularly the candlelight service on christmas eve and seeing the candlelight illuminate the excited faces of my kids. And i love sitting in the living room with my husband, drinking tea and shutting all the lights out except the christmas tree. dreamy.

Jennifer Sloane said...

Traditions for me have changed over the years. My favorite that we still do is on Christmas Eve we get to open up one present which is our Christmas pajamas! We then wear them while opening all of our gifts the next morning. I love it! :)

Michelle (from KY) said...

The best thing our family does every year is all get together. Each side of my extended family makes a huge effort to all be together for Xmas. No small feat when you consider a total 14 aunts/uncles, over 30 cousins, spouses, kids.....but we all look forward to it and it is so much fun catching up with everyone!

ArlaMo said...

We always open gold presents on Christmas Eve which have our Christmas pjs in them. Love the pictures of my children all ready for bed in matching jammies.

Sandy said...

One of our family traditions is letting the kids open one present on Christmas Eve. This usually takes some time and they have to jiggle and rattle each package. We have an unusual Christmas dinner tradition of serving saurkraut with out meal. It tends to balance out all those starches.

Lori Y. said...

I actually have two favorite traditions. 1)Each Christmas Eve before we get the cookies ready for Santa, out three kids get to open one present. The present contains new Christmas pajamas for them to wear that night and for Christmas morning. 2)Ever since our kids were newborns we have gifted them with dated ornaments. They each have their own collection of sleigh bells or holly bells that they get to hang on the tree each year. It's so excited to see the collections grow year after year, and know that someday they will be pasted along for their family tree.

Ginajam said...

A favorite tradition from when I was a child was always opening one gift on Christmas Eve, and that one gift was always a new pair of pajamas so we would look cute for pictures in the morning. Now I enjoy buying/making an ornament to remember something special from the previous year. This year I'm getting a school bus ornament because my son started preschool this year.

moonlightgrrl said...

Oooooo... i LOVE those Elle's goodies!

Ever since I married hubby, we've made it a Christmas tradition to come up with a non-traditional menu and invite the family over for festivities. one year, I did surf & turf. the next year i made a strata and we had a lavish breakfast. every year, it's something different.

Amanda Worley said...

My favorite holiday tradition would have to be the family Christmas cookie baking. Everyone comes to our house, bringing with them, the cookie cutters, sprinkles, and goodies. Scattered throughout the main floor of the house we all roll out the mixes and bake our creations. In the end, everyone gets a sampling of ~10 dessert types, instead of a whole batch of maybe 2 recipes that we would have made at our own houses. Plus, we get to spend time together making them!

Jodi R said...

Every year since I turned one year old, my mother has presented me with a new ornament for the tree. The ornament always represents something about my life that year. I am so happy to be giving my daughters their own ornaments each year. Decorating the tree is like taking a walk down memory lane.

Tracy said...

Our favourite holiday tradition is to put out a glass of beer for Santa (hence his big round tummy) and oats for the Reindeer's along with our wish lists. We also sprinkle glitter over the grass so Santa will see it glisten from his sleigh. We then hang a key on some ribbon from the front door so Santa can let himself in as my children pointed out that we don't have a chimney that he can come down.

Cori S said...

My favorite holiday tradition is baking the week before Christmas with my sister, and then delivering all the goodie baskets to our family on Christmas Eve. We sit around & reflect on the past year :)

Every year, the kids and I rent all the Christmas movies available at Blockbuster and we watch one (or two) every evening. They also take turns opening the drawers on the Advent Calendar to get the chocolate inside. This year, I plan on giving them their on Daily December journals so that they can chronicle the holiday season in their own point of view--something I hope to do with them every year.

Allison said...

Stockings for us too! My brother and I were allowed to get our stockings whatever time we woke up as long as we didn't wake mom and dad up before 6. We're letting our kids do the same, it was so special for my brother and I and I hope that by boys feel the same.

Kimberly said...

The question asked, "do I want to win?" Ummmmmmmmmmm, heck yeah. I adore Elle's they make great items.

My favorite tradition on Christmas Eve. is the one gift I give all the kids and let them open it up...is new pajamas and then we all sit around on the floor as my DH puts on his Santa hat and tells the Christmas Story from the Book of Luke. I love looking at my children as they listen. I always get choked up by the story and the love that fills us in that moment each and every year.

katey said...

christmas a.m. we always open gifts one at a time to make the experience last as long as possible. then after all the hard work of opening gifts we make breakfast together! then go to grandma's house for more food and gifts!

Erica Hettwer said...

I love to lay down under the Christmas tree in a dark room with the tree lights on and look up. It's just so peaceful.

Alison Day said...

Hmm ... do I have to pick just one? Our stockings also always had an orange in the toe ... and a candy cane sticking out the end. Now, as an adult, I love our annual Christmas Open house - picture 50 odd people, a good 20 of them aged 7 and under filling every room in our house!! It's a blast! I also love the Christmas morning Wife Saver and lazing around in my pj's all day Boxing Day. The rule is that the cook gets to relax!

Chelsea and Manuel said...

The first night that our tree is set up and completely decorated, our kids get to camp out in the living room and sleep with the tree lights on. A little slumber party, the glow from the lights is so magical and really signifies the start to the season! Those goodies from Elles Studio are great!

Sara said...

Mine is getting a letter ready for Santa with the boys to leave him on Christmas eve. And, we leave him cookies and milk and reindeer carrots too! The next morning, they have all been eaten up by Santa and the reindeer!

We are EXTREMELY BUSY with visiting family on Xmas Eve and Xmas Day. While my kids get to open lots and lots of gifts, they don't get to play with any of them because we are enjoying the time with our extended family. So 2 years ago I named the day after Xmas TOY DAY. The 4 of us stay home all day and have fun with just our little family. We play with the toys together, play board games, drink hot cocoa, eat xmas cookies, and have PIZZA for dinner! After running around to 4 families in 24 hours the day before, it really helps us to enjoy US.

Tracy said...

My mom-in-law has a tradition whereby she creates Advent Calendars for all of us. They are different every year and contain gifts and sweet treats. Everyday, after reading a scripture, you are allowed to open one gift I have a photo of my son sitting looking at his advent with absolute longing in his eyes, wanting to open them all at once ... it's a wonderful tradition, especially for the kids ...

Diana said...

Our family celebrates Christmas on Christmas eve. We all hop in the car and go out to look at all the beautiful Christmas lights then retun home to open gifts and have a nice dinner.

This tradition started when I was 5 and my sister was 3. We would go out Christmas eve to see all the pretty lights and to see if we could spot Santa, Rudolph and his sleigh. We never did see them, but he always found our house by the time we got home. Gifts were under the tree and there were tracks from his sleigh in the snow in our yard. Such good memories.

Melissa said...

My favorite holiday tradition is driving around at night looking at lights. When we were kids, we would get to put on our jammies first, then go driving to the best neighborhoods for lights, then get doughnuts on the way home. So fun!!!

Vanessa said...

I love to make advent calendars for my husband. And another great tradition is that we make tons of cookies! The house smells so yummy all the time!!! My mother always wanted them to keep for christmas, but we sneeked some out. After christmas no one wanted to eat all the cookies any longer!

our family tradition is to decorate the tree as a family, with each child adding a personally hand made ornament.

Laci J said...

Wow, I just read all the previous posts and now I cant wait for Christmas to come. I especially loved the one who leaves out beer for Santa! LOL
My faves:
1. All my brother-in-laws get super excited and wake up ridiculously early like 4AM, and the youngest is 18 years old. But they know that they cant open anything till mom makes the once a year German Apple Pancakes, sausage, more sausage, juice, and then some enough to feed an army.
2. I love making decorations, like advent calendars out of muffin tins, and sewn glove and stocking ornaments.
3. Getting to make fun of my brothers and sisters during the opening of presents. Laci in Alaska

Rachel said...

oooohhhh, cherry-go-round for breakfast. It would simply NOT be Christmas without it!

Diane said...

I don't think I can pick one favourite tradition. For me it always starts with baking cookies on the first Advent weekend. Of course there is also the Adventwreath with 4 candles.
The decorations also start going up the first Advent weekend but the tree will only go up the night from the 23rd to the 24th.
One new tradition for us is making, sending and receiving all those Christmas cards.

I think its really important especially now that we have our own children. Thank you for the chance to enter the giveaway.

a holiday tradition for my husband and I is decorating the tree together. We each put out our special ornaments and talk about where they came from

It's hard to pick a favorite - I'd have to say making gingerbread houses with the kids at home, then making a huge round with my kid's entire class! I make 25 graham cracker houses at home over a couple of days, and in school the kids decorate them. It's the closest I"ll ever get to feeling like the "Cake Boss" - trying to get those houses loaded in the car, through the school halls & into the classroom without breaking them is almost comical! But it's all worth it to see the look on the face of a child who doesn't get the opportunity to make a gingerbread house at home - and to witness their creativity!

Lasagna for dinner on Christmas Eve. With days of turkey, stuffing and the fixings in the future - lasagna is a make-ahead dinner that can be taken from the freezer and heated. Little effort for a busy time.

I love decorating the tree. It's a mess and takes an entire day, but I love it.

My favorite tradition is putting out the cookies & milk for Santa, then going out on the porch to sprinkle "reindeer dust" where we want Santa's reindeer & sleigh to land. The reindeer also get left some yummy carrots! It is a magical tradition at our house that I don't know if I'll be able to stop someday :)

Mine is what we do over the entire Thanksgiving weekend. We get to see relatives that we haven't seen in ages on Thanksgiving Day, followed by trimming trees on Friday (not into the shopping frenzy that day), then decorating the rest of the house over the weekend. We put up a tree in each of the 4 bedrooms and one in the playroom - 5 trees keep the house twinkling and bright!

i love our advent devotions each night leading up to Christmas. it's such a special time to remember and teach our children why we celebrate this holiday!

Christmas night we gather as a family and sleep in the living room by the Christmas tree. All decked out in our new pajamas, we lay next to each other under the twinkling lights and reminisce of what our favorite thing that happened that month. After such a busy day (and month) it's nice to just relax and enjoy it all.

There are so many little traditions that I love, but I'll say our Christmas Eve supper with fried ham sandwiches and the non-stop snacking that follows is my favorite.

We open our stockings 1st and there is always an orange in it and some fun necessities. We always have a fun breakfast like a special pumpkin bread or pastry and then steak and baked potatoes and salad for our Chrstmas dinner meal. Just love being together withour 2 daughters.

We read the story of Christ's birth from Luke 2 every Christmas morning before opening any gifts... as the kids get older, they've been reading it to us & it's like opening my eyes to a new story when I hear their little voices recounting it. That's my favorite tradition by far.

As a kid mine was always that on Christmas Eve my Mom would let me pick one present that was under the tree and open it. I will do the same with my daughter when she gets a little older.

My favorite holiday tradition is baking bread and cookies with my kids and my mom. We have a great time together and it's just the simple little things like that during the holiday season that mean the most. : )

I have a three year old and a 18 month old. Growing up we didn't have many traditions s last years I started a few for our household. Starting on Dec. 1st I tell them a story and each night I add to that story. The story ends on the 25th. I make sure each night write down the story and before new years I put it into a nice book to give them. Another tradition is picking out or making an ornament that represents their them for the past year. I look forward to continuing our own traditions!

My favorite holiday tradition - leaving out some stuff for Santa and the reindeer - my girls are 14 and 11 and I know we will still be doing it again this year!

We have alot of traditions - my oldest daughter thinks if you do it once, it's a tradition. We always do the stockings first, then pass out presents. But you have to wait your turn to open & then only one. It takes a long time, but everyone's gift gets the attention it should. Then it's a special breakfast. The menu varies, but I try to make it extra special.

First our kids have a "double header" Christmas concert in church. Then we host Christmas Eve with my side of the family, and always have the kids open presents in order by age, youngest to oldest.

I love Elle's Studio!

Our tradition is to update our felt advent calendar every night (along with a chocolate one--I think the kids enjoy both, but the chocolate one is my favorite-of course!) We also have to feed the reindeer on Xmas eve...it's not Christmas without oats and glitter!

Count me in! My favorite holiday tradition is candle light services on Christmas eve. What a wonderful time to reflect the nativity.

Although it never really started out with the hopes that it would become a tradition, a favorite tradition of mine is Christmas Eve wrapping. Everyone in the family comes from all different places and we are always so busy with travel arrangements and making everything just perfect that we never quite find the time to wrap the presents. Now, on Christmas Eve, after Mass and Grandma's house, we all go in a different room hording the wrapping papers and tape dispensers, so we can wrap presents for eachother. It always makes me laugh because we get so creative in making sure you cannot see what is being wrapped from the door because it is inevitable that someone will always try to barge in when you least expect it with hopes to see what presents ight be for them!

Now that i havemy own place, i still do it. The recipe is from the grandmother of my grandmother and i do it exactly like they used to do.
